Jan Albert van Tijen was a Dutch architect known for his involvement in post-World War II architecture. He was a member of the Group of Dutch Architects (Groep 32), a group focused on modernist architecture. Van Tijen was deeply involved in the reconstruction of Rotterdam after the city was heavily bombed during World War II. For the Rotterdam City Hall, van Tijen contributed ideas that combined modernist design with a sense of monumental architecture, reflecting the resilience and future-facing identity of the city. He was particularly focused on using functional, rational design principles that were characteristic of the era.

Huig Maaskant was a well-known Dutch architect, and he also made significant contributions to the post-war reconstruction of Rotterdam. He had a significant role in the design of the Rotterdam City Hall, especially in its more practical aspects, ensuring that the design met the city’s growing administrative needs. Maaskant's architectural style was deeply influenced by modernism, but his work often incorporated elements of expressionism and bold, sculptural forms. For the City Hall, Maaskant was involved in its design starting in the late 1940s and was responsible for many of the building's modern features. The Rotterdam City Hall was built to accommodate the growing municipal needs after the devastation of the war, and Maaskant played a crucial role in ensuring the building’s functionality while maintaining an aesthetic that represented the modern identity of Rotterdam.

Start building Lijnbaanflats, 1957

The Lijnbaanflats, built starting in 1957, were part of an ambitious project around the Lijnbaan shopping street in Rotterdam. The complex consisted of towering buildings designed for urban living, with 850 residential units, shops, and garages. It featured two large green courtyards, designed for residents to enjoy a peaceful environment away from the bustling city traffic. The buildings were developed through a collaboration of investors, architects, and the city government. Architect Maaskant oversaw the project, which included flats designed by different architects. The flats, named after the associated investment companies, were a striking feature of the city's postwar reconstruction, offering modern living in a highly urbanized area.

City House is a monumental 12-story building located in the vibrant center of Rotterdam. Designed in 1955 by architects Van Tijen and Maaskant, it features a mix of 88 two-room and 33 three-room apartments. The building also accommodates luxury shops, restaurants, and offices.

In 2022, extensive restoration work was undertaken to preserve the building's historical significance. This included repairs to the emergency stairwell, refurbishment of railings, replacement of glass with safety glass, exterior painting, and maintenance of concrete layers and masonry. The project aimed to restore City House to its former glory while maintaining its status as a Rijksmonument.
